Dean Beech, Mark Kirk, Pedro Taylor and Jason Hadley hacked into the ATM at Waitrose in Kenilworth with the circular saw, crowbars and a ‘jaws of life’ hydraulic cutter – the type used by fire crews to rescue crash victims from vehicles.

They spent eight minutes trying to access its cash vault – causing damage estimated at £20,000 – before speeding off frustrated in a stolen Audi RS7.

West Midlands Police officers picked up the gang northbound on the M42 as 37-year-old driver Beech reached racetrack like speeds in a bid to shake off the attention of unmarked traffic cars giving chase.

However, a police helicopter monitored their movements from the skies and directed police to a block of flats in Mile Oak, Tamworth, where Kirk (34), Taylor (30) and 27-year-old Hadley were found hiding in an apartment.
